about trill.wav

trill.wav is a record label founded on the ethos that the underground is keeping dance music alive. With an increasingly eclectic catalogue, genre distinctions matter naught, and forward thinking music is able to be showcased to the masses uninhibited.

about the name

trill.wav was founded with a very strong footing in hip hop. As most know, in southern rap music, the word “trill” is combination of “true” & “real”; something we strive to be in everything we do here. In audio, a “wav” file is one of the highest quality files that can exist; not only a nod to our existence as music makers, but also a promise deliver high quality content.

about the logo

We have two logos, the line logo and the circle logo

Simply put, the line logo is taken straight from the word “trill.wav”, and currently serves as the main representation of the brand. The two upward lines are symbolic of upward progress, while the outlying dots remind us that the world is by no means linear. Progress is not always in the forward direction, and growth can come from everywhere.

The circle logo is somewhat of an unintentional performance art piece; it was created by the trill.wav team in the inaugural stages of the label, and was conceived by the systematic removal of straight lines from a diamond. Through this process, it became what it is today, and by accident, the “T” and “W” remained prominent through the process.

data loop

data loop

Producer/DJ Duo

According to an ancient urban legend, data loop is an amalgamous entity. Being conceived in a Givenchy store deep within the matrix, data loop emerged bearing a kick drum and bass module. Gaining musical experience in the unforgiving fields of battle, data loop accompanied many emperor’s in their siege’s; Alexander the Great, Ghengis Khan, Charlemagne, Napolean have all utilized the musical assault that is data loop; the latter even writing the first historical account of a record deal. Following the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, data loop grew bored of the earthly confines of its exitence, and spent the next 200 years traveling the cosmos, studying the arts with the universe’s best teachers. Following a hugely inspirational tenure with Debussy on Neptune, data loop returned to Earth. Realizing the extent of just how powerful it had become, data loop, as a sign of mercy to the earthly inhabitants of the time, split its energy into two bodies as to not overpower the human race. Choosing the gritty midwest as home, data loop re-emerged, kick drum and bass module still in hand, to bring about a contemporary revolution the likes of which haven’t been seen for a millennia.

image - 'Loose Patterns' (TW011) // Out Now

Following 2013’s ‘The Process’, trill.wav front man image is back with his sophomore effort, ‘Loose Patterns’. Picking up where ‘The Process’ left off, ‘Loose Patterns’ shows a natural evolution of image’s sound; whereas the former was often big and bassy, ‘Loose Patterns’ is crafted with a much more subtle tact, and teeming with nostalgic excitement. A1 brings “Make Me Feel’, and with it, a powerful start to the record. Image shows a great understanding of his place in the continuum of dance music: lying somewhere between Zomby and Shadow Child, ‘Make Me Feel’ brings a percussive organ, a bassline Digital Mysticz would envy, and a break absolutely seething with raw dance floor energy. The second cut, ‘In The House’, sees image use a classic garage mold to brilliant results; a wonderfully warm organ complemented by a soul sample makes for very satisfying listening experience. Closing the EP is the B-side, ‘Ivory Towers’, and it brings the most straight forward dance track, with thick harmonies punctuating a very Detroit-esque groove. With this newest record, image has firmly staked his claim in the dance realm as a force to be reckoned with.

keepsakes (tw010)

keepsakes (tw010)

  • artist: kvnkly
  • released: 15 july 2014

‘Keepsakes’, the inaugural EP from our very own Kvnkly, is hard to pindown. With influences ranging from experimental pop-outfit Animal Collective to electronic maximalist Rustie , KNVKLY is never shy of pushing boundaries and blurring lines, something ‘Keepsakes’ does effortlessly. The opening track, “And Then She’ll Say” is an acoustic number, with the man himself singing a very melancholy hook over brooding piano. ‘Got To Know’ picks up the pace with a Regina Spektor sample and quirky drums before the warmness of the synth grabs hold.  Taking cues from Bristol’s early trip-hop days, ’8below’ begins with a driving rhythm before major sonoroties, characteristic of the whole EP, conquer the landscape. Napster’ is a journey in and of itself, as calm synths and sparse drums explode into a fury a of footwork madness. Closing out the record ‘Peaches Castle’ is the most straight forward dance track, and the synth solo is one more feel good moments on the record. On remix duty we have Legion of Doom’s Endor bringing wonderfully pop-centric mix, and our very own image who takes a bit more maximal route to the floor.

A very special thanks to Scott Mullen for the art.

man i’m ready remixed (tw008)

  • artist: satta don dada
  • released : 25 february 2014

TW008 is an unbelievably eclectic remix EP of Satta Don Dada’s newest track, “Man I’m Ready”. The original track sets the foundation with flurry of chord stabs, 808’s and 70’s samples coming at you at 160 bpm, and the EP never looks back. With juke abstractions from Duke JukeGami, and the always illusive Cocky Balboa; house tracks from beatnok and image that could not be more different; a deep dubstep mix from Datswotsup‘s own Karnage, and an absolutely hypnotizing reimagination from HR GRP‘s Gallons. Did we mention all artists are from Michigan?

these demons hate you (tw007)

these demons hate you (tw007)

  • artist: feathermeal
  • released: 28 january 2014

TW007 is our first LP, and comes to us via the New Orleans based feathermeal. Although not official stated as such, the record comes off as a concept record, loosely based around content often mentioned in apocalyptic literature a la ‘The Divine Comedy’, but where Dante left off, feathermeal picks right up. Hauntingly tastefully vocal samples create the back drop for a surprisingly linear record, and feathermeal speaks with the voice of a man who fears no demon, and he produces with a shockingly honest approach. Juxtaposed with the pristine nature of most electronic music, ‘These Demons Hate You’ is sure to shake you loose of all preconceived notions.

the process (tw006)

the process (tw006)

  • artist: image
  • released : 29 December 2013

TW006 brings us a beautiful 4 track bassline house EP from trill.wav co-founder image. As an artist, image has finally began hitting his stride; finding his niche somewhere between a run down basement in London, and main stage at Creamfields. ‘The Process’ is aptly titled, and the project plays out like a ‘how-to’ of sorts. The opening title track sets the tone beautifully, with its powerful percussion it acts as an intro for the release, and plays out as a manual of sorts for ‘the process’ of music creation. “Shaded” brings up the pace, with its haunting horn, tasteful synth arpeggio’s, and powerful bassline. “Let’s Get Sexy” is where the release really hits it’s stride, and is the perfect example of powerful minimalism. The release is closed off by “On It’, a track which has a hard time deciding if it wants to be a 3am chill out track, or an 11pm peak time monster; so it’s up to the listener to decide. “The Process” is at home both in the club and in the car, and will no doubt become the go to for both parties and everyday life.

  • artist: beatnok
  • released : 10 december 2013

TW005 brings us ‘Packard’, the 2 track debut house single from label co-founder beatnok. Taking influence from his home of Detroit, beatnok crafts two monstrous dance floor hits; from the deep house-esque basslines to the more tech-y sounds of the drums, this release runs the gamut of classic midwestern dance music. The A side ‘Packard’, aptly titled after a classic Detroit rave spot, starts with simple melodic elements that slowly build into thick harmonic density, before a massive expulsion of energy aka the bassline. The B side “Kercheval”, also named for his home town, rounds off the digital 12″ in classic Detroit fashion.

x.o. (tw002)

  • artist: beatnok
  • released: 15 june 2013

TW002 is the first EP from label co-founder beatnok. A hard hitting EP focused around hip hop, “X.O” is cohesive tribute to the music he grew up listening too. From the extremely broken “Day/Night”, to the melancholic melodies of the title track, to the brooding energy of “Gutta”, and even the trance-like harmonies of “My Lulla(bye) 2 U”, beatnok has shown he is limited to no genre, to no single emotion, and rather displays a diverse pallet of musical understanding.

TW001, our very first release, comes fittingly from label co-founder image. Jam packed with bass, “24 Karat Dreams” defies genre distinctions. The intro track has a tough time deciding if its minimal or maximal, and the rest of the tracks follow suit. From the boom-bap styled “Stanley, the rhythmic density of “Lotro”, and the founding kicks of “haus”, this EP puts forth a cutting edge take of dance music, and provides a strange sense of fulfillment to anyone who adventures into it.

TWS001: beatnok – ‘White Girls’

To coincide with “White Girls”, we have Ingres’s ‘La Grande Odalisque’. The painting, commissioned by Napoleon’s sister, was completed in 1814. At first glance, it appears to be Neoclassicist (Greek in nature), taking influence from works like Titan’s ‘Venus’, but he leaves clues leading to her true origin. The turban, peacock feathers, the hookah, and even the name of the painting give way that this is no Greek figure, but instead a Turkish harlot. Seeing as Christians and Muslims were not seeing eye to eye at the time, this tended to be forbidden subject matter for a Frenchmen. Even stranger than her origin, is her anatomy. As you can see, her torso is abnormally long, and in this writers opinion, makes the piece particularly unnerving. Between the sexual undertones, and the anatomical abstraction of the odalisque, the piece was not well received at the time, and continued to be criticized well into the 1820’s. It currently hangs at the Louvre, in Paris.

TWS002: kvnkly – ‘Gimme That’

After visiting the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg and purchasing this piece of art, kvnkly states that he became deeply mystified by the painting of Salvador Dali.

“The eponymous painting deals with Christopher Columbus’s first landing in the New World; it depicts the event metaphorically rather than aiming at historical accuracy. Columbus is depicted not as a middle-aged mariner, but as an adolescent boy in a classical robe to symbolize America as a young continent with its best years ahead of it.
Dali, in a period of intense interest in Roman Catholic mysticism at the time, symbolically portrayed Columbus bringing Christianity and the true church to a new world as a great and holy accomplishment.”

PAINTINGwww.wikiart.org/en/salvador-dali/…her-columbus-1959

TWS003: Mark Kloud – ‘Attic Heat’

Coupled with ‘Attic Heat’ is Hans Holbein the Younger’s, “The Ambassadors”. Although German-born (and working in London), Holbein displays the influence of his Flemish predecessors with a large, meticulously detailed double portrait on oak panel. On display are two, historically disputed, French ambassadors standing amongst various scientific instruments and tokens from distant lands. An oriental carpet adorns the high shelf exhibiting their reach while a design from Westminster Abbey lies under foot denoting more domestic endeavors. Representing the Heavens is a celestial globe sitting amongst a sundial and quadrant. On the table below sits a terrestrial globe, a loot, and arithmetic book representing the living world. Most notable is the inclusion of a large, anamorphic skull. The skull’s distortion acts as a visual puzzle, morphing into an accurate rendering when viewed from the right side. While Holbein takes great care in showcasing the triumphs of men, we are left with the overarching sentiment of imminent death.

This painting is on display in The National Gallery of London.
